Are
there any software packages available for printing out notation
of my music or midifiles?
Various
software packages are available for notation purposes. Notation
programs are still pretty finicky when it comes to getting
all of the details right, but the ones that seems to do
the best job at notation (at least in my experience with
multiple notation packages) is Finale
by Coda
Music Technologies.
Some
tips if you're trying to translate your live performance
into ANY notation program - Play your music like you're
dead. After all, the computer is just a computer, it's not
as smart as you, and it doesn't know what an accelerando
or a pause or rest is. You'll have to manually go in and
edit your music afterwards, insert your dynamics etc., and
re-check the notation to make sure its correct and playable
by human beings. Playing each note at the precise moment
that it's supposed to appear in the score can be tricky
for some people, and it takes a bit to get used to playing
pieces without any emotion or performance dynamics whatsoever.
If
you can't stand doing it that way, you can always enter
the notes manually (various notation programs support quick
entry with mapped keys for note insertion and such). That
seems to work the best for me, especially if I already have
my notation written out by hand.
If
you have a scanner, and you've written your music out by
hand, products like Midiscan
(by Musitek)
will let you scan your hand written notation and have the
computer organize it for you. Like anything, scanning your
music in still doesn't yield perfect results, especially
if you have a low end scanner. Luckily you can edit what
you've scanned to help you achieve perfect results.
