What
are the different sequencers, and what are the differences
between them?
There
are literally hundreds of MIDI sequencers on the market
today - way too many to mention here unfortunately, since
the majority of them are quite good. (Check out our Guide
to MIDI Sequencers for more detailed information and
product specs).
The
differences between various sequencers can vary a great
deal. Some sequencers offer more advanced features that
others - like the ability to design custom graphical control
surfaces to control your equipment from your screen. Others
offer complete multi-track hard-disk based audio recording
built in, giving you complete control over your entire mix
with the click of a button. However, that's only the tip
of the iceberg. The features of the more advanced sequencers
are seemingly endless. Most of the time though, it comes
down to a personal choice between a musician and his or
her sequencer. Take into account before you purchase a sequencer
that it has to work well with you, and not get in the way
of your productivity or creativity.
Ask
yourself a few questions when you're trying out different
sequencers: Does it offer the features I need for what I
want to do? Does the manufacturer have a good customer support
policy and upgrade policy? Most important of all, especially
if you're a beginner - What's the learning curve? Also,
ask the sales people if they'll throw in a couple bottles
of Asprin, just in case.
